Housing Development at Ajmir
Status: Conceptual
The site lay on the outskirts of a small town near Ajmir, Rajasthan on the banks of a lake. The client's brief called for an apartment building with a multipurpose hall on the site. This would be the first time that the apartment typology would be introduced in the town, and hence the design had to be unique in its approach.
The lake thus became the focus of the design. In order to avoid the typical situation of the building becoming a wall between the road and the lake, the design addresses the site context by creating an axis between the road and the lake, with the actual building flanking this axis. Each apartment was designed as a linear module aligned with the axis, ensuring oblique views of the lake from every room of every apartment. Some modules span across the central open space like bridges while others are staggered to create open terraces at various levels.
The entire structure is raised on a pedestal which is accessed by a grand flight of stairs and which accommodates the multipurpose hall within it.
