Bungalow at Charkop
Status: Proposed
This project posed a challenge to design a two-bedroom house on a cramped site only 6m wide and hemmed in by existing buildings on three sides. Not wanting to build a house like the surrounding ones which typically feature a front room with one window opening onto the street and a dark, un-ventilated kitchen occupying the back, the solution was to reduce the ground coverage and provide an atrium at the back of the house which acts as both a wind scoop and a light well. This opened up the house on two sides instead of one, allowing cross-ventilation. Making the living room double-heighted and opening it out onto the atrium creates a pleasant, airy space and also makes room for a full height clerestory window which floods the space with light while providing privacy from the street. The house rises to G+2 storeys with the bedrooms occupying one storey each.
